Charles Bloomfield was born in 1882 in Higham, (Newmarket Q3-1882 3B:527), baptised in St Stephen's Higham on 3rd December 1882, son of Amos and Julia Anna BLOOMFIELD (née MUTIMER).

1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Barrow Bottom with his father Amos BLOOMFIELD[46] a stockman born Honington; his mother Julia Anna [46] born Brundish; brothers Harry [23] (farm labourer) born Wilby, Samuel [17] farm labourer), Walter [15] (farm labourer) and James [11], the three born in Mendlesham,and William [6] born in Higham, and sister Harriet [13] born in Mendlesham. He also had an elder brother Alfred and an elder sister Grace

1901 census...Aged 18, a blacksmith, he was at Bargate, Higham, with his parents and brother Harry.

1911 census...Aged 28, a blacksmith, he was at 76 Upper Green, Higham with his widower father, brothers Edward [31] a labourer,born Wilby, Walter (smallholder) and James (bricklayer), and sister Harriett. Also a niece, Muriel BLOOMFIELD [3] born Higham. There is no indication as to whose child Muriel is. Two of the nine children had died, his mother dying in 1906. His father was still there in the pension card.




He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. As he died of wounds and his Army records are not available, we cannot say where or exactly when he was wounded. His original grave was lost, hence a special memorial in the cemetery. On the 5th September the battalion were garrisoning Hill 60.
